Shorashim? What Does it Mean?

Technically, the Hebrew word Shorashim means “roots”, but for me personally, the word symbolizes my most treasured professional experiences as a special educator at United Talmud Torah Elementary school in a program of the same name.

It’s hard for me to register that it’s almost 10 years ago that I worked with Audrey, Soly, Birdie (who happened to by my Mother), Tina & Karen at BJEC to help launch such an important program in the Jewish Day school system, but alas: the years have flown by.

My experiences with the 4 students in the Shorashim program (and their families) has inspired me to this day. Many of the insights and inspirations for our ideas, games, toy concepts & digital learning solutions were born from the spirit of those 4 students who enlightened my sense of self and my understanding of the human condition for the 2 years I worked at UTT.

I have so many amazing memories of those years, but I’ll share one in particular with you that still stands out to me to this day:

One of my students had a tough time controlling his behaviors (I’m putting this mildly). One day, I took him outside of the classroom and to try and talk him through and help him understand his actions. He appeared to be completely enthralled in my life lessons, giving me his undivided attention – eyes fixed directly onto mine. When I asked:

“Mark” (not his name) “do you understand what I’ve just said”. He replied

“I’m in your eyes”.

Turns out, the entire time I was speaking, he was completely mesmerized by the fact that he could see his reflection in my eyes. In fact, he truly believed he was transported into my eyes. I’ll never forget that lesson in human perception. Mark was right. To him – he was in my eyes. We all see things differently.

I certainly do thanks to Mark and Shorashim.

What’s Old Is New Again. At Least, On Sesame Street It Is …

What I love about all our new content delivery platforms is how they encourage content producers to dust off their aging work, give it a quick polish, through in some marketing dollars and voila! what’s old is now born again.

The Care Bears and coming back, the Smurfs are right on their tails (or rainbow I suppose is more appropriate) and even Tin Tin is getting calls from some of Hollywoods biggest directors to star in their next big film.

So many licences and content producers are looking back for ways to brighter their futures, and Sesame Street is no different. The legendary edutainment company has just released volume 1 of their classics, including content from their first ever episode from 1969. I was -8 years old at that time and incidentally it was the same year that work started on something called: The ARPAnet (AKA: the grandfather of the internet). ARPAnet was designed to protect information going between military camps using a network of seperate computers exchanging info via a new protocol called NCP.

Man we’ve come a long way since then.

Sadly … we can’t say the same about Oscar the grouch, who remains depressed as ever and is said to have signed on as a guest celebrity on an upcoming episode of “Hoarders”.

Jason’s Thesis: Autistic Culture & I.E.P’s – Exploring Online Forums from Autistic Community Websites

I’ve been meaning to share my thesis online for quite some time now. It was originally supposed to be published as part of a chapter of a book on Special Education, however, the professor I was working with at the time ended up retiring and never completed the publication. Needless to say I was very disappointed. It was the first and only time in my life that I was on the cusp of being published. Hard to say whether my research, thoeries & insights will resonate with teachers, parents, researchers and of course: individuals with Autism – but I’m certainly looking forward to hearing all your thoughts.

Quick Notes on my thesis:

1 – To the best of my knowledge, this thesis is the first of its kind to mine online discussion forums of autistic community websites for research data. Obviously this is a somewhat controversial method of gathering research data, however, I worked closely with the dean of research at McGill, and my thesis supervisor was the Dean of Education at McGill at the time: Mr. Roger Slee. I can assure you all, this research was done with ethical integrity and clearance.

2 – Grounded Theory Approach: my thesis employed a grounded theory approach in order to let the data “speak” and for the true voice of the autistic community to shine through. I don’t believe this research effort could have been completed any other way.

3 – Lastly, it should be noted that unlike some researchers/students who may be writing on the topic of Autism, I have indeed worked a great deal with individuals (kids, teens and adults) in clinical, educational and home settings. That’s not to suggest my research is more valid then theirs, but I believe when it comes to the world of autism, there is a sensitivity that is required that can only be experienced first hand in order to truly understand it’s nature.
